As far back as I can remember I have always been fascinated by people; ideas about people; and the meanings we make of our world.

I worked in education for many years before embarking on my psychotherapy training and my hunger to know more and deepen my practice has never left me.  I have subsequently become a supervisor, coach and latterly Sensorimotor psychotherapist working with trauma and the body.

I work holistically, with the whole person, and the whole of life. With our separateness and connectedness to others; with hopes , dreams and human suffering. My approach blends the wisdom of ancient and modern teachings with the most contemporary theory and practice in depth psychology and neuroscience.

I help individuals, couples and groups to understand themselves more deeply, communicate more effectively, cultivate inner power and freedom, and come closer to realising their potential, whatever that may be.

Hello,  I am a fully qualified counsellor, having started training in 1998 and in part-time private practice in 2000. I am a member of BACP and have completed the four-year training programme at the Insitute of Psychosynthesis, where I was awarded my Counselling Diploma in 2017 and  Master’s Diploma in Psychosynthesis Psychology in June, 2019.  My Master’s Degree in Psychosynthesis Psychology was awarded by Middlesex University in 2019. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a specific type of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy developed in the late 1980s by psychologist Marsha M. Linehan to help better treat borderline personality disorder. Since its development, it has also been used for the treatment of other kinds of mental health disorders.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a cognitive behavioral treatment developed by Marsha Linehan, PhD, ABPP. It emphasizes individual psychotherapy and group skills training classes to help people learn and use new skills and strategies to develop a life that they experience as worth living. DBT skills include skills for mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Why does DBT teach skills?

Problematic behaviours evolve as a way to cope with a situation or attempt to solve a problem. While these behaviours might provide temporary relief or a short-term solution, they often are not effective in the long-term. DBT assumes that clients are doing they best they can, AND they need to learn new behaviours in all relevant contexts. DBT helps enhance a client’s capabilities by teaching behavioural skills in areas like mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. These skills help people develop effective ways to navigate situations that arise in everyday life or manage specific challenges.

I have been in practise for 20 years and have practising privileges at several Priory Hospitals in the South East. I am a fully accredited UKCP Psychotherapist and have been awarded an MA in Psychotherapy and a Diploma in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, DBT. I studied CBT at Surrey University and my MA was awarded by Middlesex University. We teach the dialectic behavioural therapy skills: Emotional regulation, Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness and Distress Tolerance skills. We are DBT psychologists and DBT Psychotherapists.
What is DBT? Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is a type of talking treatment. It’s based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), but has been adapted to help people who experience emotions very intensely. Please call us for an informal chat if you are considering DBT treatment.
What is the difference between DBT and CBT? CBT focuses on helping you to change unhelpful ways of thinking and behaving (see Mind’s booklet Making sense of cognitive behaviour therapy for more information). DBT also helps you to change unhelpful behaviours. Our DBT group program is now available in Hendon North London, it is a 29 week program.
Internationally recognised criteria are used to diagnose BPD.
A diagnosis can usually be made if you answer “yes” to five or more of the following questions:
Do you have an intense fear of being left alone, which causes you to act in ways that, on reflection, seem out of the ordinary or extreme, such as constantly phoning somebody (but not including self-harming or suicidal behaviour)?
Do you have a pattern of intense and unstable relationships with other people that switch between thinking you love that person and they’re wonderful to hating that person and thinking they’re terrible?
Do you ever feel you don’t have a strong sense of your own self and are unclear about your self-image?
Do you engage in impulsive activities in two areas that are potentially damaging, such as unsafe sex, drug abuse or reckless spending (but not including self-harming or suicidal behaviour)?
Have you made repeated suicide threats or attempts in your past and engaged in self-harming?
Do you have severe mood swings, such as feeling intensely depressed, anxious or irritable, which last from a few hours to a few days?
Do you have long-term feelings of emptiness and loneliness?
Do you have sudden and intense feelings of anger and aggression, and often find it difficult to control your anger?
When you find yourself in stressful situations, do you have feelings of paranoia, or do you feel like you’re disconnected from the world or from your own body, thoughts and behaviour?

I use a range of approaches. My original training was in psychosynthesis psychotherapy. I have since added knowledge and skills in attachment theory, sensorimotor and trauma-informed therapy.

My approach

To support you achieve better wellbeing I use a range of approaches. My original training from 2006 was in psychosynthesis psychotherapy. Psychosynthesis therapy is a broad based approach that works to understand the issues and problems that you are currently facing by looking at aspects of your past. It looks at the patterns you have developed and seeks to uncover hidden or underdeveloped parts of yourself so that you can realise your future potential and find purpose and meaning.

I have since added knowledge and skills in attachment theory, sensorimotor and trauma-informed therapy. But the most important aspect of our work together will be whether you feel I am someone you would like to work with and are able, over time, so share your deepest concerns with. Research has shown that the most important factor across multiple different therapy approaches is the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client.  A Clinical Psychology Review article in 2013 said “the therapeutic alliance (relationship between therapist and client) plays an extremely important role in the change process”.

So the most important decision you will need to make in choosing a therapist to work with is whether I am somebody you would like to work with. The initial assessment is an important way of helping you know this.

Approach and Duration
The number of sessions will depend on the issues or problems you are bringing, and whether they are specific or general in nature, and is always dictated by your needs and choices.

The first session is an opportunity for us to meet and get to know each other. I will ask you general questions about yourself, your background and your reasons for seeking counseling. You will have the opportunity to ask me questions about my background and experience, the counseling approach I use and anything else you may wish to know.

Each session lasts an hour and we would review the work regularly.

**Coronavirus COVID 19** We are living in unprecedented times and therefore, given the most recent guidance from the WHO, I am able to offer online counselling sessions to new and existing clients during this interim period.

The threat of Coronavirus (COVID 19) brings with it feelings of tremendous fear and anxiety in the face of uncertainty. This is only made worse by the idea of extended self-isolation.

It is natural to feel fearful in the unknown present.

It is both a natural and understandable response to feel anxious, stressed and helpless.

But know that even if you find yourself physically isolated, support is and can be available to you.

I believe that now more than ever, one to one counselling needs to be as accessible for anyone who needs it, which is why I also offer a few low-cost places in my private practice.

Sessions can be for a few weeks, months or even longer – whatever you need. So please feel free to contact me if you are struggling and are wondering if counselling might help you get through this challenging and frightening time.

When I am asked what is distinctive about the way I work with clients, three principles emerge.  The most important is I “see” the person, not their problem, not their symptoms (such as anxiety, depression, stress, feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness or loneliness).  I know that behind a battle with any problem, difficulty or loss, is another human being, a unique individual, a fellow traveller.

I am always careful never to confuse the person with the situation they find themselves in.  We all have problems, it is how we face them that matters, not how the world judges us.  People have always been important to me, and I accept them for who they are.  I like to think I can talk with anyone.  It is what makes us tick that matters, what makes us sing and what makes us cry, our drives, interests and purposes.

Addressing a mental health issue is as much about learning as it is about healing, it is about getting to know previously unseen parts of ourselves, and learning how to improve communication between our different parts. I help people to help themselves.  As the old adage goes:

Give someone a fish, and you feed them for a day;

Teach someone to fish, and they feed themselves for life.

It is a real privilege to work with people facing difficult times, to offer myself as guide to those brave unsung heroes or heroines.  I can’t help notice that when people address their darkest thoughts and negative feelings, it is as though a light is switched on inside them.  They became much happier and live more fulfilled lives.  Mental health and well-being is not just about getting rid of bad things, it is also about opening ourselves up to wondrous things.

I can help clients move from healing to development, and my role transforms from counsellor to coach.  The many years I spent in difficult schools, as a teacher and as a leader, helped me to appreciate the relationship between mental well-being and the learning of simple yet powerful skills.  On a personal level, I’ve always been committed to experiencing the best education and training available.

As a teacher, I obtained a number of higher University Degrees, including a Doctorate in Education Leadership.  As a Registered counsellor and psychotherapist, I trained at the Institute of Psychosynthesis (organisational member of the UK Council for Psychotherapy) in London.  I am a Registered Member of BACP (British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy) and APP (Association of Psychospiritual Practitioners) confirming my role as a personal guide.  I keep myself up-to-date professionally and donate my time to a local hospital and mental health charity on a regular basis.

The role of therapy and what in can offer you is varied and wide but generally I support people to understand, make sense of and move forward in their lives. Whether that involves overcoming addictions, dealing with childhood wounding, making their way through loss, finding meaningful love or attending to feeling life is painful, stuck, stagnant or blocked.

Claire is a UKCP registered therapist, having trained at the Institute of Psychosynthesis, qualifying as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor in 2005 and has over 15 years of experience.  She worked for 3 years as a Case Manager for a national provider of psychological services.  She uses an integrative approach with Psychosynthesis as her core model.  Claire draws from different methods and techniques to inform her practice, including attachment theory, Transactional Analysis, and Gestalt and uses CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) where appropriate.  Her work values the relationship between therapist and client as integral to supporting the client’s therapy.

In short term work (usually 6-12 sessions) the work can often largely be focused on your particular issues and what you want to achieve.   Over the longer period working through difficulty has the potential to facilitate change through the development of a deeper sense of self.

Experiences that shaped me as a therapist include: life long meditation practice, twenty years working as a Specialist Palliative Care Nurse supporting people living at the threshold of end of life, experience in the arts, and working with nature as a resource and mirror of the soul.

Symptoms and issues leading you to seek therapy, will be explored both at level of personality with defences and family dynamics, and at a deeper holistic level, as valuable potentials and qualities coming through. Clients often feed back that getting their more essential nature/spirit seen and experienced, is the unexpected most valuable outcome of Psychosynthesis therapy.

The sessions are a mix of talking therapy and use of imagination and the body as resources, through guided visualisation, feeling in to sensations in the body, and drawing with crayons.
